Eight-year-old Ingrid, a curious and compassionate girl from a small village in the Canadian Rockies, embarks on a magical journey during the annual Summer Festival. She meets a lost older gentleman named Mr. Whittaker and helps him navigate the festival. In gratitude, he gives her a carved wooden bird, telling her it might have magic. Later, at a local bookshop, Ingrid shows the bird to the shopkeeper, Mrs. Hargrove, who tells her that such birds were said to carry messages or grant wishes. A sparrow then interacts with the bird before flying away, leaving Ingrid with a sense of wonder and a warmed bird. In the village square, Ingrid makes a wish on the bird, after which a mysterious young man named Elias appears. He reveals that he is a traveler, and that the bird is a token of old magic, having chosen Ingrid as its keeper. He hints at the bird leading her to unexpected places, leaving Ingrid feeling excited and ready for a new journey.
