Description
Micah and their family have just moved to a new colony on Mars. Micah finds the red planet strange and exciting but struggles with feeling like an outsider among the other Martian kids. Micah starts attending the local Martian school. They find it hard to fit in and miss their friends from Earth. The teacher assigns a project on Martian history. While researching for the project, Micah discovers an ancient Martian artifact in their backyard. They are tempted to keep it a secret to make their project the best in the class. Micah decides to hide the discovery of the artifact, thinking it will make their project win the school competition. They start to weave a tale about how they theorized its existence instead. Some classmates become suspicious of Micah’s sudden success with the project and begin to ask questions. Micah sticks to their fabricated story. Micah feels the weight of their dishonesty and starts to worry about the consequences of their lie being discovered. Micah’s new friends on Mars begin to distance themselves, sensing that Micah might not be telling the truth. Micah feels lonely and regrets not being honest. During the school presentation, the real story of the artifact comes out when an expert recognizes it in Micah’s presentation. Micah is confronted by the teacher and peers. Faced with their mistake, Micah confesses to finding the artifact and lying about it. They apologize to their classmates and teacher. The school decides to display the artifact in the school museum instead of disqualifying Micah. They discuss the importance of honesty and the consequences of lying. Micah works hard to regain the trust of their classmates and friends by being open and truthful in all their dealings. As Micah becomes more honest, they find that friendships on Mars are strengthening. They learn that being truthful wins more genuine respect and friendship. Micah starts a school project on honesty, sharing their own story to help teach other students about the value of truthfulness. The story concludes with Micah feeling fully integrated into the Martian community, having learned a valuable lesson about honesty. They look forward to a bright future on Mars, surrounded by friends who trust and support them.
